Hello 👋 I'm Hane. From a 1st-person perspective, I'm "das Bewußtsein in dem ich meiner bewußt bin". Otherwise, I'm a philosopher and a postdoctoral fellow working at the intersection of philosophy and mental health. I also have a clinical background in psychiatry and work part-time at a clinic that provides affirmative care for people undergoing gender transition. I'll mostly use this site to discuss my research, share sweet stories about my kids, and post obscure philosophy jokes.

people obviously have seen Clark Kent and Superman in the same room at the same time. anyone who says otherwise should read Kripke's Naming and Necessity.

Zhuāngzǐ's critique of Mèngzǐ ("the sprouts of benevolence and righteousness and the pathways of right and wrong are all snarled and jumbled") makes me think of Daniel Lehrman's critique of Konrad Lorenz's theory of instinctive behaviour

it was clearly the combination of watching Bryan Van Norden's lecture series on Chinese philosophy and working at a gender clinic, but last night I dreamt that I was prescribing hormones that could transition Confucians into Daoists and vice versa

a mathematical theorem I refuse to believe is "you can't comb a hairy ball flat without creating a cowlick". whoever came up with it has obviously never heard of Schwarzkopf Got2B Ultra Glued Styling Gel

discussing the temporal paradox with our eldest kid

ME: "if you went back in time and killed me, then you wouldn't have been born, and so you couldn't have gone back in time to kill me"

OUR KID: "but ... why can't I just kill you now? ... without all the time travel?"

and they say Freud has been discredited ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

what I've found from talking with patients at the gender clinic about what gender means to them is that some focus on the phenomenological "vibe" aspect while others focus on the social "role" aspect. I think any philosophical account of gender identity needs to acknowledge both as valid.

I'm reminded of the the time when someone at a party found out I was a philosopher. he approached me saying he wanted to ask me a very important philosophical question. I told him to go ahead. he said "there's a girl from my college at this party. should I tell her I like her?"

I answered by quoting Kierkegaard's Either/Or: "do it or do not do it—you will regret both"

a great thing about living in a 17th century house with a history of witchcraft next to a burial ground is that I frequently get spooked by my kids appearing in various parts of the house and looking at me like this

I'm remembering that time when I was teaching the trolley problem and a student argued that it would be fine to push one person off the bridge to save five, except if that person was the Queen, as this would upset so many people that it would have negative utilitarian value. 😒

Happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Earlier this year I decided to return to clinical practice alongside my academic role in philosophy and I accepted a job in gender affirmative healthcare. Working with the LGBTQ+ community has been such a wonderful experience and I hope I can do more to be a good ally.

after watching Le Weekend and L'Avenir, my new favourite film genre is "philosophy professor gets divorced after travelling in France"

William of Ockham would be appalled if he could see how many blades there are on a modern razor.

CW: food

I put out some cookies and now Twin #1 has one in each hand, one sticking out of her mouth, and one inside her mouth bulging out her cheeks. I think I know which way she'd go in the marshmallow test.

quietly grumpy after reading a paper that claims to explain the existence of X that just presupposes X but calls it Y

Lithuania 2006 was my favourite Eurovision entry ever. I like the analyticity of "vote for the winners". The hard bop violin solo + avant-garde dance combination at 1:37 is also sublime.

my most cishet trait is that I saw someone post "Portugal 🇵🇹🏆" and I immediately thought "wait but Portugal aren't playing any football matches today" and then I realised it was about Eurovision

I have an old email address signed up to Philos-L and this is what happens when I don't check it for two weeks.

new philosophy of psychiatry just dropped and it's SO GOOD 👇

Tim Thornton is a legend in the field and was doing philosophy of psychiatry before it was cool

watching Mamma Mia and it turns out that it's *not* an Italian adaptation of Georges Bataille's Ma Mère

... and that was "Impact" by the Research Excellence Framework
