I'm not perfect. I made a mistake in asking this site how to pronounce someone's name. It looked racist and someone called me on it. Fair enough. I didn't intend to imply name wasn't valid. I don't want to be racist.

I'm used to asking hivemind for help with things I'm not sure about. I often get helpful answers. I also appreciate kindness and feeling safe to learn. I'm leaving this instance for another where I'll still get prompted about mistakes I make but maybe with a softer stick. @Kay@mastodon.nz

I've noticed a couple of follow requests from names I don't recognise, and with no profile info. Sorry that's not enough for me to say Yes to. Please add clues to your profile. Who are you? 🗂️ 🤷 🦉

I’m doing a project featuring little-known women of science as a part of my studies as a lab technician.
I’ll be drawing some portraits and illustrating the research and discoveries of some interesting scientists✨

Let’s start!

But other instances are too small and seem to be nonEnglish language readers.

Any other bookish instances with 100+ members?

I wrote an article about the need for low-carbon and #sustainable #computing and the path towards zero-carbon computing.

tl;dr:

** The problem:
* By 2040 emissions from computing alone will be close to half the emissions level acceptable to keep global warming below 2°C. This growth in computing emissions is unsustainable: it would make it virtually impossible to meet the emissions warming limit.
* The emissions from production of computing devices far exceed the emissions from operating them, so even if devices are more energy efficient producing more of them will make the emissions problem worse. Therefore we must extend the useful life of our computing devices.
** The solution:
As a society we need to start treating computational resources as finite and precious, to be utilised only when necessary, and as effectively as possible. We need frugal computing: achieving the same results for less energy.
** The vision: please read the article, I'm out of characters.

The makers of @pixelfed, the Fediverse photo sharing platform, have just created a slick new guide to the Fediverse at:

fediverse.info

It's got a list of Fedi projects, a list of mobile apps for Fedi platforms and an opt-in directory of people to follow.

The directory is particularly interesting as it works very differently to FediFollows or Trunk. You add hashtags to your profile plus a special extra hashtag #Fedi22, then submit your profile to the site, and it will become searchable for the tags in your profile.

(And, yes, Mastodon is part of the Fediverse, see here for details: mstdn.social/@feditips/1082159)

Twitter newcomers.. if you want to share a toot you find in your timeline with your followers, then a boost is the only way to do so. Unlike twitter which want to show everyone what you Like, a like (or favourite) on the #Fediverse is more personal.

Use Likes as acknowledgment, token of appreciation, sign of agreement, or just to store in your favourites list. It is your interpretation and personal expression.

Use Boost to spread stuff around, encourage discussions, share delightful content.

#RightToRepair will become an absolute necessity in the near future. Having all the supply chain completely fucked up and prices all over increasing like never before, people will need to learn how to do stuff themselves instead of pulling a credit card.
