During his PhD in Physics, my husband wrote a program to simulate Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) images from VASP calculations (a code for computing quantum mechanical structures of materials). This allowed him to compare his computational results directly with the experimental STM images of his colleagues in the lab.
He made the program freely available through e-mail. He told me he just passed the 500rd download request (since 2008). 🎉 More info on his website:
