grad admissions process

Are there any *good* grad admissions metrics that don't have significant correlations with race, gender, or socioeconomic status?

The grads in my department want to down-weight or remove parts of our application that are likely to introduce bias or present a large cost burden, but... that's pretty much everything 😬

bad advising

I considered cw-ing this as a rant, but having experiencing it a few times in the past several months (including from otherwise-great mentors) it feels less like a personal issue and more like a strangely common mistake

bad advising

Advice to advisors, administrators, etc:

Right at the end of berating or criticizing an underling for poor performance is *not* the time to ask if they're being impacted by something from their personal life.

Wait until:
1) You are calm
2) They are no longer feeling attacked
3) You can believably sound concerned rather than upset

And please never phrase it like an accusation—no matter how much you think you already know the answer.
