Random fact about Finnish

In Finland, duct tape is mainly referred to as "Jesus tape", and often shortened down to simply "jesari".

If I engage my calque-machine, it produces an analog of "jesari" as "jeezer".

As in "Dog bed had gotten chewed up, so I fixed it with jeezer".

Enjoy.

Random fact about Finnish

@ansugeisler why is it referred to as jesus tape?

Random fact about Finnish

@trickster Because people look to it for their salvation.

Slap that shit on errything!

Random fact about Finnish

@ansugeisler @trickster That's right.

Originally ”tekee ihmeitä ja pelastaa”, that is, ”(it) makes miracles and (it) saves”.

I don't know when the name got popular. It was at least mid-1990s if not earlier.

Random fact about Finnish

@Stoori @ansugeisler @trickster Oh come on. Jesus could not possibly have been fixed to the cross with nails. They don't call it Jesus tape for nothing.

Random fact about Finnish

@harri @ansugeisler @trickster then, who invented it? the romans? or is it more ancient?

Random fact about Finnish

@ansugeisler This is probably the moment to introduce "Jeesusteippilaulu", or The Jesus Tape Song:

Random fact about Finnish

@kirjis @ansugeisler Whoa, it’s still somewhere online! Didn’t remember.

Random fact about Finnish

@kirjis @ansugeisler Random anecdote about Jeesusteippilaulu: I really _have_ repaired my pants and shoes with jesari, as is told in the lyrics.

But those were separate, rather absurd incidents, and not related to some biblical downwards spiral in my life (as in the song).

Random fact about Finnish

@ansugeisler I kind of like the notion that if I find a duct tape with a design that really suits me, then I’ve discovered my own personal jeezer.
