Critiquing queer representation in media

~ The Queerbait-Tragicqueer-Straightcomfort Test ~

"One of those 'low bars' that turns out not to be such a 'low bar' after all"

Does this piece of media have at least one (1) named queer character who:

馃崓 Can't easily be read as a straight character (blink-and-you-miss-it "representation" doesn't count)
馃崓 Doesn't have a tragic ending, and
馃崓 Hasn't been written primarily to make straight people comfortable?

Suggestions for films I should watch so I can add them here?

We can have a watching party :BlobPopcorn:

I think the most interesting potential entries would be:

馃崓 Things that you'd expect to have good queer rep, but fumble the ball
馃崓 Things that get really close, but muck it up

@bgcarlisle I like this chart and concept a lot! I can鈥檛 think of any suggestions at the moment, but I have some thoughts:
- this is probably already captured by your criteria, but one criterion I like to use myself is whether or not gay characters are shown to be in relationships to the same 鈥渆xtent鈥 that straight characters are (eg. if straight couples kiss in a show and there鈥檚 a gay couple, is the gay couple also allowed to kiss in the show?)

@bgcarlisle

- another thing I see a lot is actors saying that a character is queer and that they play the character as queer but the writing doesn鈥檛 reflect that at all. not sure what category that would go under bc technically this isn鈥檛 representation at all, but it鈥檚 a pet peeve of mine

anyway, I don鈥檛 know much at all about media analysis and such, but I鈥檓 definitely curious to see more of this! thank you for sharing it!

@bgcarlisle @hvincent If we're branching into TV series, most of the Arrow-verse superhero shows have from decent to excellent queer rep.

@malone @hvincent I got a couple TV series on there

Not sure what Arrow-verse is ha

Critiquing queer representation in media

@bgcarlisle Heh. A set of shows based on DC comic books with the same creators and a common/overlapping setting. The first one was "Arrow" (Green Arrow) and there have been four or five spinoffs since, some with queer leads, some with queer secondary characters, and being queer never is anybody's doom (or sole defining characteristic).
