App name opinions
The old Web 2.0 names like "Tumblr" were obnoxious
But they were searchable
Naming an app, web service, whatever with a single word that has other uses is so much worse, though
* Not searchable
* Lends itself *really* well to confusion for people who don't already know it
~ Example of a thing that has happened multiple times ~
Me: Hey do you have Signal messenger?
Them: Yeah (they don't have Signal; they think I am asking if they have Facebook messenger and wifi signal)
re: App name opinions
@djsundog "Are you using Endnote?"
@b_cavello "Did you write this with Pages?"
App name opinions
@bgcarlisle signal is badly named. also searching for messenger i had (more) malware looking clones advertise above it
re: App name opinions
@bgcarlisle i run a matrix synapse server and host the web version of element messenger, and i can never find what i need for either of them when i try looking up info that isn't in the documentation

@bgcarlisle ConnectWise used to be the name of a ticketing/billing system. Now it's the name of the company, and the product is named Manage. Great. Try to usefully search for information about "manage".
Same company bought LabTech, a nice searchable product name, and now it's called Automate. Great. Try to usefully search for information about "automate".
I hate this new era of generic-term naming SO MUCH.
App name opinions
@greyduck Oh jeez
App name opinions
@bgcarlisle then it's "oh, just search for it online" "this is a wikipedia article about microphones".
Sigh.
App name opinions
@bgcarlisle the best names were the positive energy hype mostly made up words from Web 1.0 that would end in exclamation points. Bleem! Beanz! Yahoo!
re: App name opinions
@bgcarlisle this, yet we have hundreds of years of experience successfully ensuring that there are zero name collisions in racehorse breeding. like, cmon,
