Everyone: ...

Pike: Hello everyone. Nobody is going to die today.

Everyone: (Thinking) This is great news

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

Also, they put three (3) people in a whole starship and sent it off to do a first contact?

Pike's haircut is what happens when a salt-n-pepper aged man goes to a barber with a style that's way too young for him

Pike: Hello we're from a very very advanced civilization where we've evolved past—

*Someone whispers something in his ear*

Pike: —ah yes, all those people we physically assaulted on the way here. I can explain.

Strange New Worlds is an homage to earlier incarnations of Star Trek in that they really *really* need to hammer home the heterosexuality of its lead characters in the first episode

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

Don't get me wrong

Shirtless Spock is a dreamboat

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

I'm honestly very very disappointed that they didn't do the uhh "Vulcan frot" (weirdo two-finger rubbing thing) as foreplay, though

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

And I know they were aiming for another addition to the "Tilly or Stamets or whoever pumping their fist to the concept of science or math so that you can squee at it" supercut that someone's definitely preparing

But the scene where Uhura goes all wide-eyed at the end over Pike saying what their uhh job is in Starfleet

It just felt really patronizing

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

@bgcarlisle That and the “will you marry me?” question felt very un-Vulcan

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

@shahaan The whole thing felt like it was the result of a brainstorming meeting where one of the higher-ups at CBS told them "we need a Spock who FUCKS"

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

@bgcarlisle It very likely was

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

@shahaan @bgcarlisle Nu-Trek just doesn't get Vulcans at all, and it's really depressing (especially since early Disco had Sonequa Martin-Green doing an *excellent* job at portraying a human who was culturally vulcan, which got my hopes up).

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

@keithzg @shahaan Martin-Green is carrying that show

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

@bgcarlisle yeah they really did that, didn’t they :blob_facepalm:

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

@bgcarlisle Yeah, twice was a bit much.

:Trek: Strange New Worlds S01E01

@bgcarlisle

Pike: Hello we do not threaten violence as a means of persuasion where I come from.

Also Pike: Hello please look at my huge starship which has descended from orbit to ominously float above your city with big weapons please do as I say okay thanks.
