Stress and workload

Lightheartedly said to partner yesterday I’m exhausted bc it’s only week 3 of 4 presentations in 4 weeks (it’s conference and preso season here); les to serious heart to heart about my physical and mental symptoms of stress and effects on family and oh wow this is so correct it’s worse than I realized.

Stress and workload

Fortuitously in another conversation yesterday someone relayed advice they had heard about working in academia: you often can’t take whole weekends off. You often can’t take whole days off. But you should still take the time. So, 4 half days a week off, whether it be on weekends or other times. Sage advice. So challenging though.

Stress and workload

@fgraver I’m so sorry to hear you had to go through that. But it sounds like things are better. I am committing to learning how to fix this, and fixing it.

Stress and workload

@chendricks My old jobs had fewer responsibilities than this one but more teaching hours and work culture led to stupid amounts of fielding email at various times and felt I couldn't relax. Definitely trying to give myself proper time off in this job. I can imagine how someone more senior just gets snowed under!

Stress and workload

@marcjones Stupid amounts of fielding emails indeed; I just finished a couple hours of trying to catch up on emails from the last week. And failing. There must be a better way. I think I need to pay more attention to where I can support others who may want to lead on some initiatives or projects, as one way. So long as I don’t overload them!
