A downside of remote work: I am on vacation and at home for a few days in between camping trips. Now that I’ve been working here for 16 months it feels like a place I should be working so it’s really hard (like, really) not to just check email and start doing work.

Like #RSS? Know #CSS? I created a tool to generate RSS feeds from arbitrary websites using CSS selectors.
And it's called... Feed me up, Scotty!

The mouse on the left in the image in the last post from the 1990s! Honestly have no idea why I still have that. Did I transport it from grad school in Texas, to first job in Wisconsin, to here in British Columbia? No clue. deskthority.net/wiki/Apple_Des

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.

Stress and workload

Fortuitously in another conversation yesterday someone relayed advice they had heard about working in academia: you often can’t take whole weekends off. You often can’t take whole days off. But you should still take the time. So, 4 half days a week off, whether it be on weekends or other times. Sage advice. So challenging though.

Stress and workload

Lightheartedly said to partner yesterday I’m exhausted bc it’s only week 3 of 4 presentations in 4 weeks (it’s conference and preso season here); les to serious heart to heart about my physical and mental symptoms of stress and effects on family and oh wow this is so correct it’s worse than I realized.

Beyond Big Tech “… there remains a wider, more diverse, and more generous world.”

"We – the GenXers – think of the internet as the open web. The land of dialup telnet Unix systems, the days of table layout, the days of dot com, the days of early tech startups, the days of the internet as a connector, the days of the internet as a business opportunity, the days of the internet as a path to social justice and revolutions, the days of the internet as a light in the darkness. That’s all we have ever known..."

It’s been awhile. I’m here, I’m tired, but it’s a long weekend so I’m coming out of my stress shell a bit.

Here is Mika, not caring at all that I can’t get to all the puzzle pieces.

US pol, inauguration

Well, I just about on makeup for the day and now I’m crying it all off. Kamala Harris!

baking

I have come late to the bread making stage of the pandemic. I needed an extended vacation time to de-stress enough to even want to start baking. First was multigrain loaf. Today is ficelles but they got stuck together.

TIL how to darn. It’s not gorgeous, but it should hold. First darning project!
