Star Trek, rhetorical theory, shouldn'ta wasted this on the bird site

all 3 perform the rhetoric of democracy

inevitable hier structure, relations with/thru the stat quo, & vetted discrimination *are* democracy

i don't want to overplay TOS; rhetoric since its various inceptions has been a political tool & raiser of institutions

can we use the performance of democracy to visualize & develop critical rhetorics?

media are messages; we can mediate trust & humanity

anyway, nerd hour over

spock as logos

*not logic

spock provides an insight into social organization--his context changes based on seen society but not his depiction as other (vulc, jewish)

the stories of spock (cultural, personal) are used to negotiate the codependence of order and disorder--duty and emotion, culture and nature--and err on the side of cosmos, that these play in an order greater than ourselves

spock is hegemonic neutrality

(3/5)

mccoy as pathos

he's wisecracking, exasperated, confused, caring--which we can identify with (as in burke's identification) as we watch the campaigns the enterprise undertakes

internally, his emotional performances (racist indignation, sober sage-ery, grumpy comradery) cut protocol and gesturing into transparent motives (i.e. "jim, you aren't going out there, are you? you could die!")

mccoy is integral sacrifice

kirk as representative of ethos

kirk is literally a rank, like captain or admiral

being "kirk" means being an adversary with authority--he has authority as a rep of the federation *and* he breaks and bolsters rules in order to have the upper hand constantly

kirk defines the virtues (arete) of the federation through campaigns we see him choose: explore this/destroy that/fetishize such

kirk appeals to discrimintory law

if i was teaching FYC in the 80s, this example woulda been hot shit 😂

i've been rewatching the star trek movies and realizing how compelling the working relationship between kirk, spock, and mccoy is

all three offer interrelated but distinct dynamics that can help us as viewers reflect on the functioning of the federation--and the ways democracy is performed

so i offer

kirk = ethos
mccoy = pathos
spock = logos

Howdy folks 🤠 I'm a Rhetoric MA student in the Upper Midwest (US). I also teach a section of first year composition!

My current work is on protest rhetorics, sexuality, and digital culture studies. I'll be (re)posting some WIPs on here occasionally.

Otherwise, expect posts on culture jamming, upheavals in academia, and sex from me 👍

I hope to meet more people in rhet and comp through this instance and queer scholars across disciplines :HeartPride:
