How do folks feel about Zoho as an email alternative to Google/Microsoft?

complaining about Mastodon

One of my big frustrations with Mastodon is the inability to post to a hashtag without the post displaying on the local timeline. So being on an instance that has a local "theme" such as this one, it isn't possible to participate in off-topic hashtags.

Seems like a missing permission level or something.

Thought maybe I should get back into my RSS reading habit. Went to check on my old feeds and almost all of them are dead. 🙁

SCI-HUB NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Do you have a few dozen gigabytes of free diskspace and a machine that can seed it via #bittorrent?

You can help save an unbelievable trough of scientific knowledge from disappearing behind the elites' paywalls!

Spread the word and seed till you bleed – for the betterment of humanity!

student evals

I received student evaluations from 24 of my 81 students this term, some of whom may overlap as I have a few students taking two courses with me.

So, you know, really useful data.

food, Mother's Day

A local brewery is doing a Mother's Day brunch today featuring vegetarian breakfast burritos with "habanero murder sauce" on them. Sounds like a good time.

You can work at my local library for $7.50 an hour, which is less than I made in my first job at a grocery store 20 years ago.

Welp, just saw my first submission of a paper to Engineering Archive from a middle schooler (age range 11-13).

Oh, also something on the siege engine engineering of Sauron's army.

An LOTR spinoff that I would have liked to have seen would be a story of the folks stationed at The Beacons of Minas Tirith.

Engineering Archive is gathering community input on the Creative Commons license offerings available on the server. In addition to CC-0 and CC-BY, we are exploring adding CC-BY-ND, CC-BY-NC, and CC-BY-NC-SA. Please fill out the following polls to provide your input.

Which of these new licensing options would you support adding to the server?

My Lecture Series speaker this week continued the discussion of robotics and drew inspiration from last week's speaker from Boston Dynamics.

She asked us to consider the responsibilities of engineers to consider the implications of their work using this week's deployment of the Spot robot by the NYPD.

Apparently we now have 8th graders doing campus visits now. I... what? I for sure was not considering where I might go to college when I was 13 years old.

@engrxiv
What if we built an inter-operable network of repositories. Individual researchers could host their personal repositories and institutions could continue to host institutional or disciplinary focused repositories as they do now.

Works would be discoverable across the network regardless of a researcher's "home" repository. Would indexing services still be necessary?

Thinking today about what #federation would look like for preprint servers. What would it look like for preprint servers, or academic publishers for that matter, to join the #fediverse?

migration, USpol

Just heard that the ASEE conference for this Summer is being moved to 100% virtual. Not because of the pandemic, but because the planned convention center is going to be used to house migrant children.

Saw a car driving on the interstate here in Wisconsin with Puerto Rico plates. Don't think I've even seen those before.

I was really impressed with today's seminar speaker in my class and his perspective on the design process.

Being told now that furloughs are likely to continue next year unless Fall enrollment "comes in really strong."

sort of video eye contact, Youtube link

For sure buying this for use in all future video meetings.
