It is similar to the metaphor I sometimes use: depression is like weather. You can make predictions, but in the end you never know what the weather will be like.

That metaphor is stolen from the sociologist David Karp and his book Speaking of sadness (1996), the second best book I have read on .

@Linuxtjej The similaritiy is that you can't control neither sea nor weather, whereas you're an idiot if you're drowning in a pond. But cannot be controlled. At best, it can be somewhat predicted.
