Crowd Control, or: How leaving your academic identity behind can sometimes work wonders in our understanding of society

Today, I'm exploring a deeply-held conviction of many |s and sociologists: representing data as a table.

Here is why we need to stop that:

"To help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same."

I am sometimes thinking about journals where I could publish my results. Out of curiosity, because I once again got a predatory journal's email, I googled and I found "Beall's List" (of potentially predatory journals), which has been discontinued but has some successors.

Not *that* academic, but if you receive many spam mails, you may find this interesting: An article on how I almost got scammed today via email. Including some tips on how to prevent that!

Btw since this is an academic space, I feel very happy telling you all about an event our institute hosts.

We have a weekly free lecture/seminar that everyone can attend via Zoom. We have a lot of exciting guests from Analytical and Computational Social Sciences.

Today in about 7 hours (15:30 CEST) we'll welcome James Evans. To participate, just send an informal email to our admin Madelene; her email is on the events page here:

I'm a big fan of the fact that here, the content seems much more … curated. It's not an easy "just scroll past" timeline as we have on Twitter, you have to actually read things. And once you read them, they're most of the time interesting! That's definitely an improvement over Twitter. A large one!

I mentioned traffic nuisances earlier, right? Here’s directly one example.

Normally, everything in Sweden is 100% digital and app-based. This means easy, no-interaction service. However, for some reason, Stockholm Lokaltrafiken’s app stopped processing payments (the card is confirmed working).

Paying sans app gives you this medieval piece of paper, without the handy QR code so that you must interact with an officer at the metro entrance.

Therefore: ALWAYS make sure you have proper backup.

I'll be talking about the pandoc-based, open source journal publishing pipeline we built for JOSS at the upcoming JATS-Con on May 3.
Registration is still open.

One big benefit of the Swedish higher education system is that you can freely move between universities. Although I’m not enrolled there, I can currently take a course in political sociology at Stockholm University — no hassle involved (except the usual traffic nuisances)

Hey, I am Hendrik, a PhD-student at Linköping University (Sweden). I work a lot with Natural Language Processing and Deep Learning. I am currently charting the neoliberal turn in U.S. Congress by looking at the representatives' language. Happy to be here!
