i'm doing volunteer note-taking to assist with an anonymous disabled student, but the disability office didn't give me any guidelines (i've already emailed them asking for advice). do any of you have experience with any part of this process?
the class is discussion-heavy with a lot of subjective/heated viewpoints, and i know my notes are biased for my own priorities, which i'm learning to filter out (but not at the cost of impacting my own learning).

@hvincent just thinking out loud here but...
What if you made a backup recording while note taking? When you are note taking and 1. Discussion moving too fast, or 2. The topic changes, you can write the time stamp of your recording?
This means you can go back later to that part of the recording to take better notes later more easily.

@tootbrute hmm i personally don't work well from recordings; my issue isn't keeping up with the discussion, it's not knowing what part of it to take down. at the moment, i tend to just note content that's most relevant for my own work, but i don't know if i should be recording *everything*. at that point, i'm practically just transcribing the discussion, and i think that goes beyond the expectations for volunteer note-taking?

@hvincent When I was a volunteer note taker I always had the opportunity to meet the person I was taking notes for. If that's not something you're given the opportunity to do perhaps take notes to the best of your ability for the first class and add a 'note' at the end that is your contact info and an invitation for them to send you feedback on how you're doing.

@gendertreyf oh, i wish i could have the chance to go over specific needs with the person i'm note-taking for, but my school has a double-blind system set up for privacy reasons. i'm hoping to hear back from the disability office with guidelines, and i think i'll follow up with them about if they can mediate feedback or some sort of dialog about my notes.

my process at the moment is:
* handwritten notes during class
* transcribe to a text file, reorganizing slightly (which sometimes breaks
chronology)
* skim for any trace of snark and edit it out
i'm a heavy doodler and my handwriting is kinda incomprehensible, so i'm not
likely to scan my notes, but i'd like to figure out a faster way to make small
asides for myself that i won't accidentally transcribe.
