💌 I like email. There is no expectation that it is answered quickly, so I can check it once a day, and only on workdays. It's good both for short answers and long-form discussions, with one person or many. It's federated and at least partially decentralised. There's a client serving all kinds of needs, from phones to the command line.

it's store-and-forward, so stuff doesn't just fall apart immediately if the wrong server goes down briefly. this works alongside the more relaxed expectations of human duty cycles

@jaranta And it supports nested discussion trees sortable by subject and recipient.

@jaranta My only problem with email is people quoting deeply nested, untrimmed discussions with a note at the top addressing some random point in the interior with no indication as to what they're replying to.

I love email, I *hate* the way some people use it.

@ColinTheMathmo I blame gmail, which popularised top replies. It destroyed email etiquette.

@dheadshot What I don't understand is how people can think that top posting is good.

What I do know is that most email clients - certainly the more common ones - make it nearly impossible to do anything else. That's one reason why I've been experimenting with DiscDAG as an alternative.

It has its problems, but for more complex discussions it's excellent.

@jaranta absolutely agree. email is universal and very stable and solid network for communication for work and for personal use. and it's already there. btw, ActivityPub has very much in common with email in its design. so, simplifying things, Fediverse is also a kind of email-like servers for messages exchange. but it sill lacks unique data format and some features like security and files attachment. but so far ActivityPub is a little bro to the email of a kind.
If it just had standardized encryption by default...
