I do hope this en masse migration will be long lasting and not reverse to the same old social media platforms. Twitter has been a relentless neoliberal tool that has made social media self-PR a twisted (and unpaid) part of the job for many academics. Performative, competitive & exploitative. I don’t want to be part of that. I want to share ideas, info & research that folks might find useful & interesting. Open knowledge 🔓

@louce I guess time will tell, I'm not this optimist about migrations. I feel like it's not going to be a mass movement, rather the usual knee-jerk reaction followed by a return to the status quo. Same as we've all seen before multiple times.

I'm not even sure if it's a bad thing or not. I like Mastodon and the Fediverse and genuinely believe that most people aren't going to get used to a zero-dopamine online social experience.

@m2m I see what you mean, there’s a lot of unlearning to do to really move away from the usual platforms. I’d be curious to see how Twitter is going to look like 2-5 years from now, & whether other market-based alternatives from tech giants emerge to eventually replace it if need be

@louce it was surprisingly easy for me to leave all those platforms a couple of years ago. The quiet, the time in my hands, the mood boost...

I don't believe in tech giants being capable of building anything remotely "social". Do you?

@m2m @louce Most things are X steps forward Y steps back, the question is which number is bigger.

I think eventually the X will be bigger than Y, the question is which instance will be that one.

@louce people are framing things in terms of the town square, but I think EM is most interested in the coffee houses
