I'm a computer science professor at Boise State, working on recommender systems and fairness in information systems. I usually databases, data science, or recsys.
My main topic right now is figuring out how fairness concepts apply to recommender systems (https://md.ekstrandom.net/research/fair-recsys); I am also working on information systems to support teachers (http://coen.boisestate.edu/piret/projects/literate) and open, reproducible research in recommender systems (https://md.ekstrandom.net/research/reproducible-research/).
@mdekstrand Hi welcome :)
@mdekstrand interesting! have you seen Stoica et. al.'s "Algorithmic glass ceiling in social networks: the effects of social recommendations on network diversity"? I've got a summary and links in https://medium.com/a-change-is-coming/algorithmic-glass-ceilings-bias-amplification-in-social-networks-3658dc11ba44
@jon I had seen it (it's in my paperpile), but I don't know if I've gotten to reading it yet. Thanks!
@mdekstrand Hey fellow Boise resident! Your research sounds mighty interesting. Glad you’re on here.
@foureyedsoul thanks!
I should perhaps also say that I am very much into bicycles and have two pet rabbits. They may come up from time to time.
