Bibliography management

I've tried a few ways to organize my papers, and while is amazing for handling a single bibliography, I wanted something to keep my full collection of papers and books under control.
So I moved to , and I'm pretty happy with it. Especially with the "Better bib(la)Tex" plugin, the "keep updated" option for exporting to .bib files is wonderful.
Now I have to find a way to keep the library on my NAS but use the client from my laptop - 1/2

Is anyone doing something like this? - 2/2

Update: I'm now synchronizing my papers using NextCloud.

I created a zotero account, so the metadata is synced with their server, but the actual files are on my home NAS.

I can now delete the papers from my laptop, and download them on the fly when needed simply double clicking on their zotero entry.

I have written a short post with the details of my setup:

let me know if it need clarification or improvement! 😄

@mprv I'm not, I am physically moving my library between computers on a USB drive. However, if you can put your library, the entire Zotero library folder, on a mountable network drive that can be mounted on every client, you can then use the library contained as your working Zotero library, just change it in settings.

@gusto
I didn't know that, thank you. I have to figure out a way to do that. Maybe sshfs to my home server?
I don't know if that's a good idea.

@mprv Zotero can use any WebDav for syncing. I have my library in a Nextcloud.

@jaranta
That's fantastic! I even have a NextCloud instance at home!

Is it possible to have it not synced but accessed remotely? I mean, I don't want to keep my whole collection on my laptop, but download (and cache) only the files I need while working on a project.

Bibliography management

@mprv I'm not sure. I keep a local copy of everything just in case my Nextcloud goes down for some reason.

Bibliography management

@jaranta
I see, thank you.

@panosNF
I tried that. I didn't keep it because:
- The note-taking capabilities are much weaker than what okular offers.
- Zotero has better metadata handling (including the automatic retrieval)
- It does not play well with bibLaTeX

I'm sure all of these things can be worked around or will eventually be ironed out as the project matures, but it's not what I need now.

Bibliography management

@mprv It's great to hear that this is possible.

Bibliography management

@jaranta
It was surprisingly easy, and I really like that I never have to upload the works to a third party server.

If you want more details I could write a blog post about the process.

Bibliography management

@mprv I think I have a pretty good idea on how it works, but it wouldn't hurt to spread the word.

Bibliography management

@mprv @jaranta wow! this sounds awesome! If you could write some tutorial, it would be great!

Bibliography management

@jorge @mprv @jaranta I'd also appreciate a tutorial post—and I think know others who would as well!

Bibliography management

@mprv hey friendly heads up, looks like a couple of your links are messed up, "people at []" and "Zotero Sync [link]" 😀

I'm been using zotero since ever but only as a bibliography manager, thanks for the library management tips!

@drocan Fixed now, thank you very much!
