RT @matthewasears@twitter.com "Identity politics is destroying Canadian unity"? Sure. The kind of racism and colonialism that allows a white person to shoot an Indigenous person in the head and get away with it does wonders for "Canadian unity." Yup. Let's blame "identity politics." twitter.com/CandiceMalcolm/sta

The writers for Discovery have (perhaps without realizing it) created a world in which there can be no historians and/or in which Starfleet/the Federation is able to re-write history as if they are an Orwellian 鈥淢inistry of Truth.鈥

Clearly events in the finale produce this situation and are meant to (re)frame Spock鈥檚 careful reply. But why wouldn鈥檛 historians have written about it? And if they did why wouldn鈥檛 Chekov et al. know this once widely known fact about a key figure in ending the devastating war?

As @BootlegGirl@twitter.com reminded me, in The Tholian Web (TOS) the crew of the Enterprise doesn鈥檛 seem to know that a mutiny has ever taken place.

CHEKOV: Has there ever been a mutiny on a starship before?

SPOCK: Absolutely no record of such an occurrence, Ensign.

We see early on that everyone in Starfleet has heard of Michael Burnham, the mutineer. But after events in the finale this knowledge seems at some point to have been erased, restricted, or hidden somehow.

What鈥檚 the role of public knowledge, Starfleet knowledge, history, and historians in the Federation universe that imagines?

How do we stop ICE? We recognize that "legal" is not a moral standard. The law can be immoral, it can be wrong, it can be evil and right now in the US the law and law enforcement are evil.

How do we stop ICE? We pledge that any time we're in a position to do anything that might help ICE we will refuse, even if it means losing that job, and we pledge to fully support those in our community who do so. twitter.com/OmanReagan/status/

"Official" monthly journal club!

(Participation is, of course, optional)

Scholar Social features a monthly "official" journal club, in which we try to read and comment on a paper of interest.

Any user of Scholar Social can suggest an article by sending the DOI by direct message to @socrates@scholar.social and one will be chosen by random lottery on the last day of the month. We ask that you only submit articles that are from *outside* your own field of study to try to ensure that the papers we read are accessible and interesting to non-experts.
