ph, not COVID but depressingly close

Man, I've been hit by the worst allergies I've had in years in the last week. Trouble sleeping, headache. I'd worry about COVID, but major congestion, no cough, and only losing smell when, you know, no air through the nose. I think Brussels has just found some kind of new arch nemesis pollen for me...

Mills College is a HWC that has been educating women for 17 decades. Today, it's undergrad student body is women, enbies and trans people, while it's post-grads have always been all enders. A majority of Mills students are BIPOC and a high percentage are the first in their families to be in higher education.

Mills is teaching the leaders of tomorrow and is .

(For instance, it's hosting our tiny family video collection with the videos themselves on DigitalOcean Spaces – 1TB of outbound bandwidth for $5/mo, and I *think* it's unlikely I'll exhaust that.)

Of course, bandwidth can be a problem (!), so if you have a huge collection this will be an expensive solution – you should be using a PeerTube instance instead. But if you just want to put your personal videos online somewhere to show your friends and family occasionally, then I think this is a really clean solution.

Have you ever thought to yourself "if HTML5 media playing support is baked into modern browsers, why is it hard to self-host a video gallery?"

It's not. Google's Shaka player JS, plus ffmpeg to transcode your videos to DASH, works like a champion to make your own personal mini-YouTube. Check out the basic scripts here on @codeberg:

ugh, not now psychosomatic pseudo-cold that i give myself every few years from overwork, i have too much work to do

🚀 Trusted sources tell me this Philosophy of Lambda workshop will be great & there is still time to register: history-and-philosophy-of-phys (June 16, register by June 8) #philsci #lambda #science #cosmology #philosophy #time #physics #epistemology #space #academia

Anybody out there need 32GB (2x16G) of DDR4-2133 *registered* RAM? Crucial 1.2V CL15 RDIMMs.

I don't own any server boards anymore. Would be happy for it to have a good home, it would make me slightly less furious for not realizing that I needed to buy new RAM when I replaced my old office desktop mobo. Will gladly ship, esp. in EU.

(Why did I have a server board and RDIMMs in my office desktop? I have literally no idea at this point)

Excited to be giving a talk this afternoon in a conference hosted by Yafeng Shan at Kent on metaphilosophy. Not my usual bag, but I'll be talking this afternoon on the nature and justification of digital methods in philosophy!

You can still register, just check the program and write to Yafeng here:

New Video about #SaveMills - why this college should be saved

After the post, we got some questions about "What is an HWC?" It's a Historically Women's College. What this means and more about the college is in our new short video:

Hello Fediverse!

I am currently preparing material for my potential bachelor thesis in communication design. I'm looking for info on open source usage or workflow in the design industry (but basically everything none-Adobe). I know of David Revoy's book project and would love to hear about more experiences. If you have any yourself or any material at hand (blogs, videos, papers, etc.) I'd be happy if you could send it my way. 😊 ❤️

academic job market

The major aggregator for philosophy jobs in the English-speaking world has listed thirty tenure-track jobs. For the entire year. It's May.

Without some kind of serious compensating action – I'm talking a few years of actual, concrete, above-average numbers – these are worldwide-crisis grade numbers that will cost us an entire cohort of scholars, and harm countless departments. (Administration w/o a balance of junior & senior faculty is hell.)

Really intermittent CPU errors, which probably means something motherboard related. At least there's no problem with the storage and I can take my time getting the data off of it.

Been getting some weird crashes on my old (and extremely well used) Thinkpad T460, and sure enough, got a few errors in a Prime95 stress test. Looks like six years may have been all I could get out of the old workhorse.

Gotta start marketing my rejected drafts as "the paper THEY didn't want you to read"

Being the coordinator of MAP (Minorities and Philosophy) Warwick, I got the chance to collaborate with MAP Birmingham and MAP Nottingham in putting together this terrific event about Philosophy, Academia and Mental Health. If anyone is interested in attending any session, please, register at this link:

Really mad about this Linux kernel - academic research kerfuffle. See:

TL;DR: researchers at UMN introduced patches to Linux kernel that contained known-buggy code TO WRITE A PAPER and the UMN IRB didn't consider it human subjects research :blobangery:

Wtaf were these researchers thinking? How did the IRB not consider this human subjects resaerch? How did someone think this was an ethical thing to do?
