In "Teaching To Transgress," bell hooks reminds teachers the need to forgo the desire for instant gratification: "In my professorial role I had to surrender my need for immediate affirmation of successful teaching (even tough some reward is immediate) and accept that students may not appreciate the value of a certain stand point or process straightaway.

@rusty I struggle with that SO much. My mentor said - every class I just try to enjoy myself, so even if it doesn't go well, I still feel good.
I try to focus on that when a class is not going like what I want, I try to do something that makes me happy if that makes sense.
