Introduction from Save Mills

Hello! This account is news, announcements and more from the Coalition to Save Mills College, a 501c3 founded by a Mills College student to fight for the school to remain a degree-granting institution. We are students, staff, faculty, alums, and friends of the college.

Mills is a liberal arts college located in Oakland California. It is one of just 37 HWCs left in the United States.

Introduction from Save Mills

@Satsuma @save_mills @celesteh I had some questions about that, too. 🤔

I think it means "Historical Women's College", but I couldn't find any Google results for the acronym, at all.

If it means "HWC" as in, not an "HBC", that's um, a problem.

HWC is a historic women's college. There are just 37 left in the US.

Mills was the first to admit trans women based on self identification. Today, a significant proportion of undergraduates identify as non-binary, so the undergrad population is women, enbies and trans people, a majority of whom are people of colour and many are LGBT. It is a Hispanic Serving Institution* and is one of the most diverse universities in the US. The postgraduate programme is all genders.

* This is a legal designation in the US for any college or university with a percentage of latinx students above a set threshold.

I should have defined my terms in the original post, but scholar.social only allows 500 chars. It's so brief!

@celesteh @mdm @save_mills thank you for elaborating!

And yes 500 characters is much too short for us academics haha
