Community Standards reminder
A supporter of Jordan Peterson's showed up here today
His account was immediately suspended
Jordan Peterson is an anti-trans activist who has made his name by punching down at the trans community
This instance was explicitly set up to exclude him, Nazis and anyone who would support anti-queer violence
Make SURE that you've read our Community Standards: https://scholar.social/about/more
Because if this bothers you, I'll show you the door, too
Community Standards reminder
Let me make something clear: "having a debate" about the basic rights and dignity owed to a minority group isn't some sort of pure, intellectual inquiry. Just framing a minority's rights, dignity and equality as a subject that is up for discussion *is* an act of devaluing them.
Community Standards reminder
@matilde Not every academic space needs to have Nazis or Jordan Peterson
Your insistence that they do is chilling
Community Standards reminder
@matilde Every single other academic space bends over backward to welcome anti-trans activists like JP or to welcome Nazis
Where is your faux indignation about that?
Community Standards reminder
@matilde
See, the cool thing about the fediverse is you can make your own little Proud Boy instance and go shove a bust of Descartes up your ass or whatever Peterson says is Western Culture before Feminism. Not every instance is for everyone.
This Community has Standards, and you're not following them. Therefore, you're being reprimanded.
@socrates
Community Standards reminder
@matilde And no, this isn't totalitarianism
This is an informal space that I set up to be one of the very VERY few safe spaces there are for academic queer people
So fuck you for coming to shit on it in the name of some hand-wringing theatrical concern for academic freedom
Community Standards reminder
@matilde @socrates this is a bad take. 1) it's an informal space, nobody has to tolerate assholes at their department parties for "academic rigor", that's a conflating two completely different concepts. 2) petersons ideas are just a straight up shitty misreading of jung. he's on the same intellectual level of the dude who posted on reddit saying that communism was bullshit because marx believed a planet-sized ghost was going to usher in communism.
Community Standards reminder
@matilde every social group has unwritten rules, that's how this shit works. you won't find a unix fanboy getting hired at MIT in the 70s, and you won't find peterson fans on scholar.social. enforcing those rules before they spiral into a huge drama is a crucial part of moderation.
Community Standards reminder
@matilde also like, given the demographics of peterson fans on the internet, i think it's pretty clear why they decided to ban the dude. walking into a queer instance and saying loudly "i love peterson!" is borderline incitement
Community Standards reminder
@matilde 1. the admin has said explicitly that it's a social group aimed at academics many times. You can't make it into something that it's not by just disagreeing with them lol
2. i'm not saying that *liking* peterson is incitement, i'm saying that walking into a place where peterson is well known to be an asshole and saying loudly that you love him is very low-grade trolling.
Community Standards reminder
@socrates
Hostility to trans people based on false premises is what launched Peterson from Canadian academia into into "Intellectual Dark Web" notoriety. This is basic. I support and appreciate your stance.
Community Standards reminder; anti-trans bigotry
@socrates Holy shit this entire thread is just... i mean, the violent entitlement is fantastic. The Cis will stop at nothing to destroy our lives if we let them.
Community Standards reminder
And as for accusing JP "lightly," a very VERY small amount of research would show that he's actively antagonistic to queer people (and willing to make money from that); if you won't do that before defending him, I'm not gonna give you the benefit of the doubt about your own intentions
