Upgrade notice

So there's a new version of Mastodon out

My usual strategy is to check that there isn't anything terrible added, then wait for a little bit to see if anything bad happens to the instances who are "early upgraders" and then I'll upgrade scholar.social after that

I will try to provide advance notice before upgrade day!

Hello to new friends and those who have been here a while

If you are new, or if you haven't done so in a while, please read through our Community Standards

scholar.social/about/more

This may save you a faux pas or a reminder about the rules from me! :)

Hi there, I'm a 16-year-old student (nearly 17), and strive to learn new things every day, though I'm not really academically aligned (as I love to learn pretty much anything and everything), I do love psychology and astronomy. Government and politics also interest me, though my main goal is to become a psychologist one day. Nice to meet you all!

Hello. I'm a UK-based lecturer in computer science. I mostly teach programming with some data mining and AI thrown in. Since my post-doc days, I've also worked in cognitive science, particularly on creating computational models of human learning.

I am here to experiment with an official 'work' microblog. I look forward to following the first two "encouraged uses of scholar.social", i.e. bragging about publications and sharing references! And also some of the third, networking.

Reminder to scholar.social users:

It is an expectation of this instance that images have descriptions in order to aid those who have accessibility needs

PhD student in sea ice biogeochemistry. I am focusing on factors controlling solutes inside sea ice brines and hope to quantify solute behaviour by experiment. My MSc is in glaciology, so I consider myself a cryosphericist.

⚠️ Reminder for new users on scholar.social ⚠️

Hello to new friends! Wonderful to have you here!

We have a Community Standards page that lays out some expectations for conduct on this instance:

scholar.social/about/more

It's not that long, and it may save you a faux pas if you read it!

Some highlights:

🍍 Err on the side of using CW's rather than not
🍍 Use "Unlisted" for non-academic/"off-topic" posts
🍍 Nazis, racists, homophobes, anti-vaxxers, TERFs can fuck right off into the sun

As my bio says, I am an economist by education, IT engineer by trade and still lamenting that I didn't study physics instead. Currently working at a technomagickal makerspace on acid. Building the platforms and systems where others develop software for detector arrays and crunch the numbers that come out of the experiments at CERN and elsewhere. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing the most boring part of the work :)

scholar.social/about/more

Hello ! I recently started my first postdoc in astrophysics at Unige. My main research interests are observational cosmology and artificial intelligence. I also play the euphonium and teach astronomy.

Hello! I'm a digital humanities project manager working specificially in spatial art history. Interested in early American history, spatial art history, video games, and public scholarship.

Hi everyone, glad to be here, all of your stories sound so cool! I'm Jackie. I wish I could share something similar, but I actually feel really stuck right now! I've had a hard time getting traction as a nonbinary person in an engineering field. Would anyone possibly consider letting me come to you for advice or even just hearing my story? To finish the intro I like art, writing, video games, cats, and knowing way too much about magnetostatic spin waves.

Reminder to scholar.social users

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that it is an expectation of this instance that images have descriptions to aid in accessibility

I actively check for this in Public posts (ones that go on the Local Timeline), but I don't actively go through all your Unlisted posts, because others can just unfollow you if they don't want to see them
