Hello #fediverse! I'm a scientist and entrepreneur interested in #freeknowledge business models and reimagining scholarship to be more diverse and inclusive. I've used #FOSS commercially for thirty years. ❤️
More stuff: I'm an atheist Jew. Born in Kyiv, #Ukraine. Family fled USSR in 70s via Italy. First language Russian. Grew up in Canada and a Canadian citizen. Lived longest in USA where I met my spouse and had a kid. We now live across the fence from our best friends. #introduction

Canada Day, Citizenship
Happy Canada Day! ❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦
Kidlet and I were briefly in Montreal last week and miss it.
I've worried she wouldn't care to claim her Canadian heritage. Citizenship application is already past half way to deadline (18yo ) She seems excited, though, to be a Canadian. It is a real gift.

“america is sliding into the long pandemic defeat” atlantic article by Ed Yong
“The impact of community work can feel small in the face of a pandemic’s scale... In fact, such work is foundational. It creates a bedrock of trust and solidarity, without which public health cannot operate. The problem isn’t that community work is trivial; it’s that there hasn’t been enough of it.”
lots of contemporary and historical examples of this, such as ACT UP in the 80’s

Ukraine Invasion, ambivalence
War is messy.
"... Oleksandr does not choose Russian side and does not support the current war. He said that questions like that could be solved with other means and not war. Deaths of thousands of people could have been avoided. Oleksandr is not for Russia, and does not seem to be for Ukraine either. In fact, none of whom I spoke to at any point said they supported Russia, even if their support for Ukraine was minimal."
If you're posting something on Mastodon that may upset someone (such as upsetting news), it's a good idea to use a Content Warning (CW).
CWs hide the content of your post below the warning, but people can still read it by clicking "Show more". This lets people decide for themselves whether they are ready to read it right now.
-To add a content warning, click on the "CW" or ⚠️ button while you're writing the post, then describe the warning in the line above.
-You can open all the CWs in a thread at once by clicking the eye 👁️ icon in the top right corner.
-If you prefer, you can set your account to ignore these warnings and show all content automatically (on the website go to Preferences > Always expand posts marked with content warnings, tick the box and click "Save changes").
-If you want to avoid certain topics completely, and never want to read about them, use filters instead. These are available through the website at Preferences > Filters.
What happened today in the US was a disgrace
Abortion is not just a right, it's a necessary medical procedure. It's a way to prevent a rapist from controlling your whole life. A way to prevent certain death due to a miscarriage.
Banning abortion is choosing to let healthy people die from preventable causes.
Banning abortion is murder.
And this is not where they will stop. These religious extremists will kill all who don't follow their views. Stop them.
Ukraine Invasion, UK MLRS
"The UK will give multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) to Ukraine to help the country defend itself against Russian aggression, the Defence Secretary has announced.
The cutting edge M270 weapon system, which can strike targets up to 80km away with pinpoint accuracy, will offer a significant boost in capability for the Ukrainian forces."

TERF / "Gender Critical" nonsense
Notorious #TERF Helen Joice:
“And in the meantime, while we’re trying to get through to the decision-makers, we have to try to limit the harm and that means reducing or keeping down the number of people who transition,” Joyce said.
“That’s for two reasons – one of them is that every one of those people is a person who’s been damaged. But the second one is every one of those people is basically, you know, a huge problem to a sane world.”

Ukraine, Scholar.social etiquette
Via @bfister Quote:
Timothy Snyder on why giving Putin an “off ramp” or worrying about how he can save face is both nonsensical and deeply careless of Ukrainians fighting for their very existence.

Also, a small question about scholar.social etiquette.
Are content warnings recommended for posts about Ukraine? If I'm "boosting" a post without a CW should I quote it the way I'm doing here?
pandoc / citeproc question
Hopefully one of you can help me with this one:
I have certain things in my bibliography I don't want to be cited in the classical (Name Year) scheme in my text, but as a specific string.
For instance I want the German version of Marx and Engels complete works cited by their shorthand MEW (Marx-Engels Werke), eg. Capital I (the 23rd volume of the MEW) not cited as (Marx and Engels (1867) 2014, p. XY), but as (MEW23, p. XY).
Is there any way to do this not manually?
oat resource, self-promotion, birdsite links
Okay, I finally have some downtime, so I guess it's time for some shameless self-promotion, haha! Maybe some of you #plant people out there have heard that hexaploid #oats (Avena sativa) recently got it's first reference #genome publication, in #Nature, no less! Well, actually, that's what I've been working on for the past four years! https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-022-04732-y
Do you want your posts to be seen by as many people as possible on here?
If so, it's important to use hashtags. Hashtag searches are the main way people find posts on the Fediverse. If a post doesn't have hashtags, people probably won't see it in search results.
Don't worry about using too many tags! As long as they are relevant, it is fine to have lots of tags. Many put a long list of them at the end of the post.
Also, if you are using tags, it's important to set the post's visibility to "Public" so that the post appears in search results.
On Mastodon you can set a post's visibility by clicking the visibility icon at the bottom of the post when you're writing it (the icon looks like a globe 🌐 , lock 🔒 or @ sign).
You can set your default post visibility by logging in through the website and going to Preferences > Other > Posting Privacy, select the default you want and click "Save Changes".

zotero, boosts appreciated
Does anyone know a good guide to attaching arbitrary data to an entry in Zotero which will be printed with it? Two typical examples: transliteration/non-Latin script title of a publication, and info about where the same publication may be found (eg. collected writings, later editions by a different publisher, forthcoming volume) 1/n
Here is a quick thread about tools and methods I use for research, maybe some of you will find them useful. I'll try to update it as I find new things.
Let's start with a game changer: the #zettelkasten method

If you don't know it, give it a try. It really revolutionized my way of learning and doing research. As an #emacs user, I'm using #orgRoam, but I know that #obsidian is also excellent
