So I guess it's time for my

I'm Andrea, a landscape archaeologist based in Rome. I did my PhD on spatial distribution of Iron Age archaeological sites along the Euphrates river.

Currently, I am working on remote sensing tools applied to cultural heritage and arch. landscape studies, plus on Historic Landscape Characterization in the Near East, and similar.

Super happy to have found this community on Mastodon!

Haven't seen this here yet and maybe others are interested too: @benmarwick (thank you) created a bot that tweets about papers that include code, available at: twitter.com/archpaperscode

I have to say, after weeks of trying to stay on top of deadlines, dedicating a full day to digitising features from historical maps felt like the most relaxing thing ever.

cultural heritage destruction: ISIS, Nineveh

I just added an article to the entry for the ancient site of Nineveh:

Throwing myself at the mercy of the fediverse here, looking for help with #umap (umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/).

I'm trying to generate a map with icons, including description and image.

I can do all that via the umap interface directly, but I am struggling (more than 1hr searching online) with improving my workflow to enable simple export from JOSM (or csv) and import to umap. I can't get the additional (to lat/lon) info to import.

Any help gratefully received! #osm

Salut,

Merci d'avance !

I went to a career fair last week and told everyone I won’t be graduating until next year, and yet a company has still called me today to make me visit their premises and talk about hiring me post graduation, despite this being several months ahead. As someone who came from humanities, I can’t believe how many doors computer science can open. Feeling incredibly grateful uni is so cheap in Italy that I can get this second degree.

The so-called “Red House” was uncovered at the centre of the lower city of Tell Schech Hamad. It was built and utilised during the Neo-Babylonian Period (626–539 BCE), and eventually destroyed by fire.

We created a 3D model of the re-plastered remains of the “Red House” in order to gain a visual impression of the project’s possible outcome regarding the heights of its walls etc. Additionally, the visualisations were used to present the project to potential sponsors.

An appeal for help:

Trunk is an opt-in directory of people on Mastodon and the Fediverse looking for followers, organised into a large range of topics:

communitywiki.org/trunk

Anyone can ask to be added, and the admins of Trunk check the account (to screen out spam etc) and add them.

However, due to the need to check the contents of accounts, this Trunk only includes people who post mainly in English. It means they have to turn away a lot of non-English accounts.

The Trunk admins want to fix this situation.

Do you use a language other than English? Do you want to help make a version of Trunk in your own language?

The English Trunk admins can help you with the technical side, but they need people who speak other languages to moderate Trunks in those other languages.

➡️ Can you help? If so, get in touch with @kensanata who leads the Trunk project.

(There is a Spanish Trunk at trunkesp.chilemasto.casa but so far no other languages.)

Friends on Scholar, I recommend using either the Masto web app, or an app that:

🍍allows you to set Unlisted as your default posting setting, and
🍍allows you to add image descriptions

Otherwise you may end up spamming the Local Timeline with stuff that should be Unlisted, or you might end up having offending posts removed, as per our Community Standards

This means, confusingly, that the "official" Mastodon iOS app is a bad choice, I'm afraid, as it provides no way to post as Unlisted

This is the account of the Grassroots Review Journal system. We will tweet about #PeerReview & (integrating) #OpenScience tools.

Grassroots Review Journals assess the quality of scientific articles & finished manuscripts. Because we only review, we are not limited by copy rights & people do not have to submit their articles to us for it to work.

We aim to be a valuable entry into the literature & to destroy the power of the publishers.

We need coders, editors & messengers.
