Hi Scholar.Social, thank you for having me!

I am a computing scientist at the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

I focus on low-carbon and sustainable computing.

Hi everyone,

If you consider yourself a software practitioner, I would be grateful if you could take this survey about Sustainability in Software Practices, this is research by on of my colleagues in my Low Carbon and Sustainable Computing group.

#PaperOfTheDay
Economic estimation of #Bitcoin mining’s climate damages demonstrates closer resemblance to digital crude than digital gold.

nature.com/articles/s41598-022

It includes a potentially interesting way of evaluating commercial/financial activities by estimating a damage cost by unit value.

I skimmed through the paper fast and, though it seemed fine, it falls into my confirmation bias zone, so let me know if there are some issues with it that I missed.

This paper is from 2013, but it is a nice example of reviewing the literature, developing models and assessing the evidence for/against them. It's a good review!

They build on body-focused meditation, and develop a model predicting what should happen and why, in chronic pain and depression.

"Mindfulness starts with the body: somatosensory attention and top-down modulation of cortical alpha rhythms in mindfulness meditation"

Of course, as long as the miners are still wanking along on their forks we've saved zero watts 💔

We need a new way of metering and distributing electricity since PoW is an electricity to-money sampo from hell

Ethereum switched over to proof of stake! 👍🏻 Now, I'm still staying the hell away from all kinds of crypto personally, but no more sleepless nights.

Some climate victories do come true ♥

There are a couple of POW networks still running, Bitcoin most notoriously. But one colossus has been felled so tonight we celebrate.

I think we need to suss out how these systems of public opinion and interaction work in order to let us set the course towards climate awareness and action, and towards human dignity, respect, and consent.

Poem about nature (+)

Ordinarily I go to the woods alone, with not a single
friend, for they are all smilers and talkers and therefore
unsuitable.

If you have ever gone to the woods with me, I must love
you very much.

I am (a minor) co-author on "Interim Report: Complexity, Challenges and Opportunities for Carbon Neutral Digital Research".

This is a project to formulate recommendations for the UK research councils to get to net zero by 2040 or sooner.

Here is the press release with some context:

The full report is quite lengthy but the executive summary should give you a good idea:

@jbhay sez:

Living in NZ and being exposed to the language, gives you some implicit knowledge of te reo Māori. But how long does this last when you leave? If you are a NZer currently living in the UK or Aus, please help us find out by doing our short online experiment! (1/2)
